Breeding Made Easy - Steps to Follow

Once you have decided to breed your mare to NIMBUS, the process can be very easy if you follow the following steps:

1. Contact Heather Mason, the owner of Nimbus, at Flying Change Farm. Your mare may be eligible for discounts -- please feel free to ask. Make it known which month you are planning to start breeding, this will make scheduling easier as the time approaches.

a) Request a Breeding contract, or print one off the website -  Read and sign the contract.
b) Pay the Booking Fee - the cost is $300 (nonrefundable) and reserves the breeding to Nimbus. Payment may be made by Credit Card  Or by sending a check made out to Flying Change Farm.

It is also possible to pay the Stud Fee as well as the booking fee at this time.

2. Schedule an appointment with your vet to determine that your mare is in sound breeding condition and free of infection. This needs to be done while your mare is in heat, and early enough so that if there is an infection it can be treated without delaying the breeding. Please provide to Flying Change Farm a Veterinary Certificate stating that your mare is in sound breeding condition.

3. As breeding season approaches, pay the Stud Fee. Payment may be made by Credit Card  Or by sending a check made out to Flying Change Farm.

Request the Fresh Cooled Semen Contract, and provide them with a Credit Card number -- all shipping charges will be billed directly to the mare owner.  This contract will make sure that the veterinary clinic has all the necessary information in order to ship the semen. At this time you should also request the Fax Request for Semen Shipment form. The veterinary clinic is user friendly -- please feel free to ask questions. No semen will be shipped without the Credit Card number on file.

5. It is very important that you contact both Flying Change Farm and B.W. Furlong and Associates on the first day of your mare's heat. This allows for tentative scheduling of the collection.

6. It is necessary to contact both Flying Change Farm and B.W. Furlong and Associates again by 12PM EST the day before the semen is to be collected. Your Veterinarian should be able to make this determination.

7. Nimbus will then be shipped to the veterinary clinic to be collected and the semen will be shipped overnight (FedEx) in a Styrofoam container. An Equitainer may be requested if your vet prefers.

8. Your vet will then inseminate your mare with the fresh cooled semen.

9. Between 16 and 20 days after breeding, it is recommended that your vet checks you mare to determine if she is in foal. If she is not, then she will soon be back in heat for a second chance. If more semen is required, and with your permission, the collection fee($250) will be charged directly to your credit card by B.W. Furlong and Associates.

10. Once determined in foal, the mare must be examined by your vet between 45 and 55 days after the last day bred. At this time Flying Change Farm must be notified of her pregnancy status, and the breeding passport should be signed and returned to Flying Change Farm.

11. Then the long wait (approximately 11 months and 1 week) for the foal to be born. This is a special occasion, and one you will never forget! Be sure you have talked with your vet and made plans for a checkup after foaling.

12. CONGRATULATIONS - You now have a homemade performance prospect with some of the best breeding available!
